1/2 Marathon Run - James Lam

It was a remarkable experience for me to participate in the Scotiabank's 1/2 Marathon Run back in 2018. My good friend Kulraj Gurm introduced me to this event and it has changed my life ever since.

It took me about 3 months of constant training to prepare for the 1/2 marathon event. Initially, I thought that it would be easy but after watching a couple of youtube videos, I want to change my mind and cancel my registration.

For me to complete the 1/2 marathon within a 3-hour time frame, I must train my pace, stamina and endurance. This is quite a challenge for me because I don't usually do intense exercise that much.

Kulraj led and trained the Team every weekend. He planned the route for us so that we are training on a mixture of flat roads and uphill. The first training day started with jogging for 30 minutes. To be honest, my first jog was horrible and I felt like I almost ran out of breath. Slowly, after a couple of weeks of training, I was able to do 1 and 1/2 hour jog at a steady pace without encountering much difficulties. Towards the actual event, I was able to run 15 KMs without any problems. I have talked with a lot of friends and they all agreed that if I was able to train myself up to 15 KMs, then running the 1/2 marathon shouldn't be an issue.

On the day of the Scotiabank 1/2 marathon event, I was able to complete the 21.1 KMs within the 3 hour time frame. I want to take this opportunity to thank my friend, Kulraj Gurm for training me and inspired me to complete this meaningful event. I had also participated in this year's 1/2 marathon event, I also beat last year's time by 30 minutes.
